Book tip: How to Deal with Failures – (The Smart Way): Anticipatory Failure Determination

Long out of print or only available electronically, two titles by Svetlana Visnepolschi are now available again in print: I am delighted to be the publisher of “How to Deal with Failures – (The Smart Way): Anticipatory Failure Determination” by Svetlana Visnepolschi in the 2nd edition.

The book contains two titles:
How to Overcome Persistent Failures
and “How to Predict and Prevent Potential Risks”.
Some of the images have been revised since the first publication, but the text has remained unchanged.

The handbook summarizes four decades of practice, research and teaching relating to the Anticipatory Failure Determination (AFD) method. AFD turns conventional causal thinking on its head: classically, failure analysis revolves around the question “What happened?”. Here you turn the process around and ask: “How can I make it happen?”. You can then check which hypothetical cause is real. With the help of checklists, step-by-step workflows, operators and case studies, you can also deal with multi-level, hidden causes of errors. The combination with TRIZ creativity tools enables time-saving solutions.

The author demonstrates a complete failure prediction framework that allows you to “think like a saboteur,” create high-risk scenarios, and neutralize them before they occur.

With the new edition, we would like to draw attention to the very good content, which is also a practical preparation for the TRIZ Expert Meeting in January 2026. Svetlana Visnepolschi will be speaking about the content there.

The hardcover book costs $49, the paperback is available for $29.
